Buying Tips for Electric Hedge Trimmers

Although a good manual trimmer may be sufficient for homeowners with only one or two hedges, anyone with rows of shrubs, multiple bushes or especially detailed landscaping needs to invest in a powered hedge trimmer. For many, an electric hedge trimmer is the way to go. Since there are so many different models to choose from, along with a wide array of optional features, buyers need to be informed before investing in an electric trimmer. Below are eight things to keep in mind when shopping for an electric hedge trimmer.

Blade Size. All hedge trimmer blades are flat, metal plates lined with teeth around the edges. Blade sizes vary greatly, ranging from about 13 inches to 40 inches. Longer blades are somewhat more difficult to handle safely and precisely, but can cut much larger areas at once. Conversely, shorter blades are easier to handle, but will require many cuts to trim a large number of hedges. Buyers should thus consider their level of experience and the quantity of plants to be trimmed when selecting a hedge trimmer.

Blade Gap. The distance between the blade's teeth is called the blade gap. The larger the gap, the thicker the branches the trimmer can handle. While some professional hedge trimmers have blade gaps of one inch or more, most trimmers sold for home use have blade gaps between 3/8 and 3/4 of an inch. If it is necessary to trim large, thick branches, consider opting for a hedge trimmer with a larger blade gap.

Blade Material. Some premium hedge trimmers are equipped with high-carbon steel blades. These blades last longer and cut more effectively; furthermore, they can be sharpened to extend their useful lives. These premium blades are also more expensive, but many operators find that the added efficiency is well worth the cost.

Single vs. Double-sided. Some hedge trimmers have single-sided blades. Most are equipped with double-sided blades, allowing the tool to cut on both sides. Trimmers with single-sided blades are somewhat easier to handle safely, since the operator can make sure the blade is always facing away from his body. Double-sided blades are potentially more dangerous, but can do twice as much work at a time. Again, safety is a very important consideration, so the buyer should take his level of experience into account when choosing a hedge trimmer.

Usage and Safety. As with most power tools, operating a hedge trimmer involves some risk of injury, so the buyer should attempt to minimize those risks. Some trimmers are equipped with tooth extensions, which help prevent the operator's body parts from coming in contact with the teeth. This reduces the risk of a cut. Additionally, buyers should look for models that automatically cut power when the trigger is released, greatly reducing the risk of an accident.

Comfort. Some hedge trimmers include optional features designed to make the operator more comfortable. Wraparound handles allow the operator to maintain a comfortable hand position from any angle, which can be especially helpful for more complex trimming jobs. A lock-on feature can also improve operator comfort by eliminating the need to depress the trigger constantly. Buyers who think they will need to use the trimmer for long periods of time should consider comfort a high priority.

Power Sources. There are few things more annoying than running out of power or accidentally disconnecting in the middle of a job. A pigtail is a short length of cord on the end of an electric trimmer which connects to an extension cord. This optional feature makes the trimmer easier to plug in and reduces the chance of an accidental disconnect. Likewise, buyers who opt for a cordless hedge trimmer should consider purchasing extra battery packs, especially if they plan on using the trimmer for long jobs.

Other Features. A pole extension allows the hedge trimmer to cut hard-to-reach areas that are high up. Likewise, some hedge trimmers can be converted into string trimmers, patio brooms or other useful devices. Buyers should take stock of their property and consider opting for whatever extra features will prove useful. Following these tips will make an electric hedge trimmer a truly rewarding investment.
